In recent years, a great deal of work has been undertaken across the country to improve juvenile indigent defense. This policy update reviews key strategies for reforming juvenile indigent defense centered on training, practice standards, communications and collaboration, creating supportive tools and resources, and advocacy.
The update is a summary of the Models for Change publication, "Raising the Standards of Juvenile Indigent Defense," with additional examples taken from NJJN's own summary of recent reforms, Advances in Juvenile Justice Reform: 2009-2011.
