Organization Profile

Kentucky Youth Advocates is the independent voice for Kentucky’s children. Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) is Kentucky’s only multi-issue policy group focused on children and youth. The organization was founded in 1975 by a group of citizens who came together over concerns about the care of abused and neglected children and youth charged with crimes in the custody of the state. KYA and partner organizations succeeded in creating change to ensure youth were not detained in adult jails. Beyond that initial involvement, one of the four goals guiding KYA’s work in the organization’s first 16 years was to prevent the unnecessary jailing and detention of youth and secure adequate remedial services for these youth.

Today, the organization’s work includes research, public engagement, and legislative advocacy in the areas of economic well-being, early childhood and K-12 education, health, safety, juvenile justice, immigrants and refugees, and youth development. As a grantee of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT initiative KYA publishes an annual data book that measures child well-being state-wide and at the county level. All efforts, decisions, and activities are driven by a commitment to the organization’s vision: to make Kentucky the best place in America to be young.
