Organization Profile

Stand Up for what’s Right and Just (SURJ) is a statewide, grassroots organization dedicated to reforming Delaware’s criminal justice system. We are committed to educating policymakers, our 3,000 members, and the public-at-large of measures proven to ensure a higher quality of justice, promote public safety, and reduce corrections costs. SURJ’s Juvenile Justice Advocacy Group is active in advocating for fair, equitable, and developmentally appropriate adjudication and treatment for all children, youth, and families involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.

The Juvenile Justice Advocacy Group works toward its mission by:

  • Proactively tracking issues and related legislation
  • Advancing a common agenda that focuses on preventive and intervention efforts that reflect our mission
  • Serving as a vehicle for state and local voices to be heard, individually and collectively

SURJ merged with the Delaware Center for Justice, and its Juvenile Justice Committee became a program of the Delaware Center for Justice (DCJ). Janet Leban, DCJ’s executive director, Joanna Champney, DCJ’s associate executive director, and Tom Brandau, executive director of CHILD, Inc. serve as co-conveners.
