Organization Profile
Voices for Ohio’s Children is a non-partisan collaborative of private, public, and not-for-profit sector organizations and individuals who advocate for public policy that improves the well-being of Ohio’s children and their families. Voices’ success and policy agenda depends on our Public Policy Partners, who are child-serving agencies, faith-based organizations, health care institutions, physicians, corporations and individuals that care about and advocate for improving the well-being of children. We use their vast range of expertise to educate lawmakers, community leaders and interested individuals about public policy that is cost-effective, has proven results, and maximizes the economic advantages of investing in children.
We accomplish our goals through:
* Analysis of research that impacts public policy on children’s issues;
* Direct communications and provision of educational materials for policy partners;
* Partnering with other organizations to raise their respective voices;
* Meeting with elected and appointed officials to impact change for children;
* Raising media awareness.
Voices for Ohio’s Children Juvenile Justice Initiative (JJI) brings together a broad-based group of individuals and organizations from Ohio to grow an informed, collective, community voice to advocate for transformation of Ohio’s juvenile justice system. The work of this initiative will be done by its partners, and in collaboration with other initiatives, with Voices providing the leadership and staffing needed to coordinate and mobilize a collective voice to promote policy change. To transform Ohio’s juvenile justice system, through a sound agenda that rests upon an understanding of adolescent development and incorporates the following best practice standards:
* increasing the range of effective community-based alternatives to institutionalization;
* addressing the challenges of youth with special needs; meaningfully engaging families and youth in their care;
* improving access to legal advocates to ensure effective representation in the system, and;
* ensuring that all youth, regardless of race or income, have equal opportunities for treatment and care.
