Juvenile Justice Reform Roundup | May 30, 2013

May 30, 2013

Updates from the Field of Juvenile Justice Reform, In Case You Missed Them:

  • The Los Angeles Unified School District voted last week to ban suspensions for "willful defiance." The change was made amid concerns that the policy was overly punitive, disproportionately affected African-American and Latino students, and the recognition that removing students from the school environment was unfairly disruptive to academic achievement.
  • The Bureau of Justice Assistance has released this solicitation for FY 2013 Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) programs. The bureau is seeking demonstration projects to establish "zero tolerance" cultures for sexual assault in correctional facilities, in accord with the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Deadline for submissions is July 5, 2013.
