A huge thanks to our members for joining us in Durham, NC for our annual forum. During the gathering, NJJN members and partners came together to host a vigil for Niecey Fennell, a 17-year-old girl who committed suicide while being detained with adults in Durham.

NJJN stepped up to support our member, the Youth Justice Project, by rallying local and national groups to sign on to a letter to the Durham County Board of Commissioners calling for an end to the practice of housing youth with adults as they await trial. We coordinated a press conference for the vigil that included local and state speakers, and sat down with a local editorial board to share further information on the issue. The Youth Justice Project has been working with Niecey’s family to raise awareness and end the harmful practice of housing youth in adult jails.
